Reflections On Simple Blessings

In the ancient rambling bungalow they gathered close friends and family

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Food carefully prepared from recipes handed down through the ages.

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Small ones scampered playing among the trees and flowers

Menfolk debated sports, politics and business in front of fire’s warmth

As the women created masterpieces mixing and baking

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Tables were set with centerpieces designed by small hands on which all remarked!

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Thanks were given and toasts to the hosts were sung

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

The turkey golden brown and moist seemed to melt in your mouth!

Sweet Potatoes bubbled in a rich sauce of brown, sugar and buttery syrup

The fresh picked green beans were tender and rolls out of this world

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Too full for even another morsel of even the over powering tempting deserts

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

The youngest two delighted when I suggested we take a walk

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Down to waters front we went their dog half Husky and half Beagle

Gleefully they scampered and skipped as Elvis their dog pulled me almost running!

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

In the soft moist grasses we sat watching sun sinking in the west as they schemed their eyes gleaming how could the distract me their old ancient aunt so they could get their feet wet!

And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!

Then tired and full goodbyes were said and each made their way back home

While the hosts and their daughter said prayers and climbed into bed

And I was reminded of so many a meal I had similarly shared around Grandmother’s table in our Florida bungalow years ago on the water's edge with loved ones long gone but still dear to my heart
And of meals shared with Alan's family while snow piled up much to the delight of this southern child's heart
And of more recent losses Yvonne in 98, Lottie in 99, Margaret in 2005 and Tom in 2010 whose table we could no longer share
And I wondered how many generations long before we were born had too!
